SHERRY A. WELLS ON EDUCATION IN THE MODERN AGE
State Rep candidates share the importance of
Aiding students and arming teachers.
One thing we know is the state of education in Michigan is failing. Though reasons are many, there is no direct problem to pinpoint to. The slow defunding of public education over the last couple of decades have left children in need, the teachers unsupported, and the system unprepared to handle the unexpected.
Sherry Wells has run for the State Board of Education because she strongly wants to improve the system. She knows we need to support the students, not just academically. “We need school nurses and counseling put back in the schools, and not just academic counseling, but real-life counseling.” So many issues face kids nowadays between hunger, bullying, home issues etc.
The underfunding is another issue. Teachers are buying their classroom supplies, and a lot of schools don't have the up to date textbooks and technology to compete globally in the educational fields. “Michigan pays 35,000 a year per prisoner, but barely 10,000 per student”, and the modern student has the disadvantage of overwhelming student debt compared to their parents.
Fields that require high education and lots of experience but provide poor wages in return are very common, and that combined with insane interest rates only multiplies the student debt problem. Sherry knows that we should “increase skilled-trade programs” especially in green energy.
Everyone knows the adage, “Give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish, and he can feed himself for a lifetime.” The problem is we are expecting people to teach these kids, distracted by hunger, to fish without giving them a pole to show them. We need properly funded schools, so kids can get the support they need, teachers have the supplies and tools to teach, and we can help improve the lives of all.
